Station: MegaZone Hit Radio
Website: http://www.megazonehitradio.com/mzhr/Social Media: Facebook | TwitterIt’s happening. The revolution of radio has commenced. And renowned community personality and radio disc-jock Peter G is the man piloting the crossover from the FM/AM dial to online platforms, over at the MegaZone Hit Radio studios. Peter is a man on a mega-mission.
It is perhaps the same sort of mission that radio-heads, who are opting to surf the web as opposed to the airwaves, are already buying into: executing the radical shift from FM to streaming. “Durban’s catching up and crossing over,” the familiar morning jock said.
It’s a statement that makes perfect sense, considering that stats across the globe show that traditional radio has experienced a serious slump over the last decade and a half. If video failed to kill the radio star, then online music download sites were probably going to do the job.
The reasons for this were simple. Listeners were finding terrestrial radio clunky. Many had said that they found traditional radio stations “nationally uniform, repetitive and clogged with adverts and promos.” The good mix of tasteful music and cheery talk was becoming lost over the airwaves and the feel-good vibes that one generally expects to experience while listening to their favourite radio station was thinning out. The listener was now opting to download his music from sites in order to cut out the commercial babble that irked him so.
Radio’s original purpose was to serve as the social media platform (before the days of Facebook), and to introduce music artists’ latest tracks, as and when they hit the market. Somewhere along the line, though, traditional radio lost the plot amidst the pressing demands from advertisers and marketers.
But then streaming stepped in and has come to the rescue with its resurrective powers, bridging the gap between discontented listeners and radio stations. And because of this, it looks like the good ol’ radio star might just be making his imminent comeback.
Streaming online has made broadcasting less costly, and as a result, the quality of entertainment value is now back on the table and subject to discussion and transformation.
That was exactly the starting-point over at the MegaZone Hit Radio studios, before the formation of the brand, back in early 2014. A team of disc-jocks were carefully selected and brought togetherto re-define the high standard of radio that the 21st century listener was looking for.
Meet the MegaZone team: Penelope and Pierre, Elaine Allan, Trevor Williams, Sammi B, Ravi R, Abi Ray, Danny Guselli and The Phatjam, Marcel. Many of these legendary names do not really need any real introduction, as they have long brought the elements of quality radio entertainment to the table of the audio media industry. These guys have set the bar high in the past and have now transferred that same standard, just slightly revolutionised by the change in technology, over to the online radio platform.
By mixing in topical, up-beat discussions, a limit on adverts and more of tomorrow’s hits today, it seems as though MegaZone Hit Radio might just have gotten the recipe for good radio right. With regular news updates and up-to-date traffic reports, the traditional elements are kept. But there are other non-traditional ingredients as well, like the in-studio Whatsapp number, that allows its listeners to interact with their favourite radio personalities during their slot (and not at a cost of R1.50), as well as the studio’s Instagram and Twitter accounts, which helps put a real face to the voice.
MegaZone’s listenership grows with every new day, as more and more people board the ‘stream-train,’ opting for the platform with enhanced choice. Accessibility is quite easy. For most smartphone users, there’s a downloadable app called ‘Tune-in’. From this, MegaZone Hit Radio can be searched and stored and tuned into at any given time. Data charges are minimal and the quality of sound is of a very high standard. The other option is streaming online, from any PC or laptop. Simply log onto the website, www.megazonehitradio.com and click ‘Listen here’. For apple users, there is also the MegaZone App, which is pretty nifty all on its own. Like its slogan, MegaZone is Durban’s tomorrow’s hits today, and invites all radio-heads, old and new, to log on, tune in, and take a peek into the future of radio.
